Dubai passes the 3.5 million mark!
Since 1960, the population has grown from 40,000 to now over 3.5 million people. Between the end of 2020 and April 2022, the population has increased by nearly 100,000 people. By the year 2040 (click here for more on the 2040 Master Plan), the population target is about 6 million. Even just schools are noticing a significant increase in new enrollments, which is an indication that many are moving their center of life to Dubai.
Change in immigration policy and introduction of unemployment insurance
The UAE is changing its immigration policy. Among the main changes are longer visit visas for tourists and easier access to the Golden Visa, which is valid for 10 years. The new regulations will come into effect this September.
In addition, unemployment insurance will be introduced in early 2023. Workers who lose their jobs under unforeseen circumstances will receive up to 60% of their basic salary for a limited period of time. This unemployment insurance will apply to employees of all nationalities in both the public and private sectors.
Driverless cabs and digital modernization
Driverless cabs will be tested on Dubai's streets this year. This will involve very rigorous testing to prepare the cabs for the sometimes somewhat hectic traffic. Then, by the end of 2023, 10 of these automated cabs should even be carrying passengers. By 2030, 4000 driverless cabs are expected to be in use in Dubai. The aim is to significantly reduce the number of traffic accidents.
In addition, the authorities in Dubai have been obliged to offer online services. They have one year to implement the corresponding requirements. The aim is to drive forward the digital modernization of Dubai.
